You may have heard about scalp micropigmentation or have seen what it can offer as a permanent hair loss solution, yet you may still have lots of questions about the details of what it entails. Here at Scalp Therapy Scotland, we are committed to making sure our clients are fully informed prior to undergoing any procedure with us. Read on to find out some of the frequently asked questions about SMP (Scalp Micropigmentation) treatment.
The Basics
For those who don’t know the basic concept of SMP, it is a type of medical hair tattoo that aims to replicate the hair follicles in order to give the appearance of a shaved look. The treatment is carried out over the course of a number of sessions, usually taking a total of three treatments, with each appointment lasting between two to five or four hours. We recommend a gap of at least ten days between your first two treatments, and then a four-week gap for subsequent treatment sessions.
How do you design the hair?
In order to best match your natural hair, we take into account the original colour and shape of your hair. We use a slightly lighter shade than your natural hair to begin with, seeing how the pigment settles into your scalp. Following this, we may go darker, to give an overall appearance that is as natural as possible. You can review our sample photographs to help you choose a hairline to suit you, as well as providing photographs to match with your natural hairline. We will draw samples and aim to start higher to begin with, as we are always able to lower the hairline later, whilst this is not possible the other way around.
What are the effects of SMP on the scalp?
SMP is considered a permanent treatment, so you need to be sure that you would like to maintain the look. Just one course of treatment can last between two to three years, and we offer a one-year guarantee in case any top-up treatments are needed, but this is usually only required occasionally within a two/three-year period, depending on your lifestyle and immune system. Although it is known as a kind of tattoo, it is not quite the same as other tattooing processes, with the technique and equipment both being different. Technicians must be specially trained in SMP in order to carry it out. It can be carried out on completely bald heads, as well as those who have some existing hair. It won’t damage your existing hair, and it has even been known to stimulate new hair growth on some occasions.
What else should I know?
There are some things to keep in mind before committing to SMP treatment. For example, we don’t recommend you get the treatment if you’re training for a sports event, as a short 4-day rest period is required following each treatment session, and even then you shouldn’t sweat excessively for a total of ten days until your next treatment. You can also expect some redness, which may fade on the day, or take a few days to return to normal. Before treatment, some people like to take some pain relief; it is not necessary, but if you do, avoid aspirin as it is blood-thinning.
